President Barack Obama
After a nail-biting night of close vote totals, Democrats across the country turned the tables and piled up a singular victory for incumbent president Barack Obama, giving him a triumphant vote of confidence and four more presidential years.
The vote capped weeks of vicious political attack ads, exaggerations and distortions of the Obama record and the transfer of huge sums of “dark money” for defeated candidate Mitt Romney, believed to have come from bankers, Wall St tycoons, oil magnates and others who feared a second Obama term might bite into their enormous wealth and obscene profits.
At 11:27 p.m., the iconic Empire State building turned blue – color of the Democrats – as Obama’s electoral total passed the victory mark. It was the end of a bruising battle where Obama’s every move was fuel for the Republican ire as they attempted to downplay his accomplishments in ending the Iraq war, passing a health care plan for all, an immigration strategy, the rescue of GM car manufacturer, the signing of trade agreements and the defeat of number one terror target Osama bin Laden.
Candidate Romney’s rash and contradictory statements prompted media around the world to endorse Obama for a second term and his popularity outside of the world remains high. Along with the Romney defeat, voters swept in progressive Senate and House candidates in Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, among others.
