THE Lagos State Police Command has arrested 25-year-old Onyeka Patrick who allegedly kidnapped a seven-year-old boy for N5 million ransom and later killed his victim.
Lagos State police boss, Alhaji Umar Manko, yesterday paraded the suspect and three others at the State command Headquarters, GRA, Ikeja.
According to Manko, who was represented by the command’s spokesman, Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Onyeka Patrick allegedly kidnapped the seven-year-old-boy simply identified as Ayuba, who was said to have been playing in the suspect’s compound.
He had allegedly demanded a ransom of N5 million but when the money was not forthcoming, killed the boy and dumped the body in a pit. ``The suspect, through his confessional statement , claimed the boy played into their compound as they were neighbours. He kidnapped the boy and took him to the back of the compound, strangled him to death and concealed his body in a sack at his residence No. 16, Third Avenue, a building next to the victim’s residence, Mumako Estate, Oke Rube, Ikotun on the outskirts of Lagos.
``Onyeka claimed he later took the body and hid it inside the sewage pit of an uncompleted building in the same neighbourhood and wrote a letter with his mobile phone number and sent it to the deceased father, demanding N5 million ransom before the boy would be released.
``While people who were around were reading the letter, a brother to the deceased, who recognized the suspect’s language, reported the case to the police which led to his arrest.
“ Onyeka, led the police to recover the decomposed body of the victim which has been deposited at the Isolo General Hospital for autopsy.’’ Manko said.
In another development, a 25-year-old house help was also arrested for allegedly stealing her employer’s jewelries valued at about N20million less than 48 hours after her employment.
Manko said the suspect sold the gold to a buyer at N1.3 million and the buyer then re-sold the said jewelries at N1.4 million. The suspect, the man that introduced her to the victim and the buyers were paraded before newsmen.
``This group and others now at large specialize in gaining employment as house-helps or drivers with fake names, addresses, fake guarantors, phone numbers and then escape with the employer’s property,’’ she said, adding that efforts were on to recover the jewelries.
