NIGERIAN HIGHLIFE MUSIC ICON, FATAI ROLLING DOLLAR, DIES AT 86

Rolling-Dollar
HIGHLIFE music legend, Fatai Olanrewaju Olagunju (AKA Fatai Rolling Dollar is dead! He was aged 86. The Won Kere Si Number Wa crooner reportedly died early Wednesday at a Lagos hospital.

His death was confirmed to the media by one of his surviving wives, Funmilola (popularly known as Iya Jamiu). Before his eventual death, he had been admitted for some days and discharged. The legendary singer fell ill on June 5, 2013, and was rushed to the hospital by one of his wives.

Often described as the Come Back King, Fatai got his famed nickname from his days in Secondary School when he had the ability of rolling silver dollars expertly before the football teams decide which side takes the first kick.  Back then he was always called by his schoolmates to roll Dollars to choose sides for football teams at leisure periods. He was born in Ede in 1926 to the family of Late Chief Olagunju.

His music break came in 1953 when he collaborated with master guitarist, J.O. Araba and tenor sax, Ishola Willie Payne to play at the exclusive Island Club in Lagos. Their Afro Skittle Band adopted Ghanaian palm wine music to Yoruba highlife sounds, a fusion that deeply influenced up-and-coming artists like Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey (whom he taught to play the guitar) as well as late Fela Kuti.  It is on record that the early days of independence saw the Afro Skittles recording several 78-rpm vinyl songs for Philips, with hits like Ranka Dede and Ogba oya ya.

Rolling Dollar, however, disappeared from the music scene for about 25 years before making a great return in 2003. He also benefitted immensely from the former Lagos State governor, Ashiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu who pulled him out of abject poverty and gave him a new home amongst other goodies.  He has left behind a legacy of determination, as his inspired return from oblivion is a pointer that no matter how old you are, you can still be relevant if you remain focused on your goals. He is survived by three wives including a German and 16 children.

In a related development, the composer of the current National Anthem, Arise O Compatriots, Pa Benedict Odiase, is dead. He reportedly died last night. Last year he got a cheque of N150,000 from the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria as royalty for using the composition as a ringtone.  The cash represents a specific point of royalty to Odiase, who retired as an Assistant Commissioner of Police.
According to our source, “The old man was sick, indebted to hospital and suffering before he died of grinding poverty”.

AMANDA BERRY AMONG ABDUCTED WOMEN FOUND ALIVE AFTER 10 YEARS OF DISAPPEARANCE

Three women who disappeared separately about 10 years ago have been found alive in a house in Cleveland, Ohio - just a few miles from where they went missing.

Police said they thought Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight had been tied up in the property and had been there since they vanished.

The trio, who went missing in their teens or early 20s, have been taken to a hospital for checks and were being reunited with relatives.  They have also been described as being in good health after being found in a residential area just south of the city.

Three brothers were arrested. One of the men, a 52-year-old, lived at the home, and the others, ages 50 and 54, lived elsewhere.

Ms Berry disappeared aged 16 on April 21, 2003, when she called her sister to say she was getting a lift home from her job at a Burger King.

Ms DeJesus went missing aged 14 on her way home from school about a year after Ms Berry.

The third woman, Ms Knight, had been missing since 2002 when she was believed to have been 20.

Cheering crowds gathered on the street near the home where the women were found.  The long nightmare for the trio ended when Ms Berry reached her arm through a crack in the front door and called for help.

Neighbour Charles Ramsay heard her screaming, tried to get her out through the door but could not pull it open.  So he kicked the bottom open and she crawled through "carrying a little girl".  Ms Berry went into a nearby home and called police.  In a recording of the 911 call, she told the emergency dispatcher: "I'm Amanda Berry. I've been kidnapped. I've been missing for 10 years. I'm free. I'm here now."  She said she had been taken by someone and begged for officers to arrive at the home on Cleveland's west side "before he gets back".  When police arrived, she said two other women were being held captive.

They were also rescued and police said a six-year-old also was found in the home, but the child's identity or relationship to anyone in the home was not revealed.

Mr Ramsay told how he rescued Ms Berry. He said: "I hear this girl screaming and she's going nuts.   "So I come outside and I know there's nobody supposed to be screaming next door to my house because there's no girl that lives in that house.  "When I came to the front door and looked at her she said: 'My name is Amanda Berry - please get me out of this house'."

Kayla Rogers, a childhood friend of Ms DeJesus told The Plain Dealer newspaper: "I've been praying, never forgot about her, ever.   "This is amazing. This is a celebration. I'm so happy. I just want to see her walk out of those doors so I can hug her."

Ms Berry's cousin Tasheena Mitchell told the newspaper: "I'm going to hold her, and I'm going to squeeze her and I probably won't let her go."
In January, a prison inmate was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison after admitting he provided a false burial tip in the disappearance of Ms Berry.  Two men arrested for questioning in the disappearance of Ms DeJesus in 2004 were released from the city jail in 2006 after officers did not find her body during a search of the men's house.

No Amber Alert was issued the day Ms DeJesus failed to return home because no one witnessed her abduction.  That angered her father, Felix DeJesus, who said in 2006 he believed the public will listen even if the alerts become routine.  "The Amber Alert should work for any missing child," he said then.  "It doesn't have to be an abduction. Whether it's an abduction or a runaway, a child needs to be found. We need to change this law."

Cleveland police said then that the alerts must be reserved for cases in which danger is imminent and the public can be of help in locating the suspect and child.

Health Minister A.F.M. Ruhal Huq said the death toll exceeded 70, the agency reported, and an army officer overseeing the rescue effort said that at least 700 people had been injured.

The collapse is the latest disaster to befall the garment industry in Bangladesh. A fire at a clothing factory in a suburb of Dhaka in November killed at least 112 people.
More than 70 people died the last major building collapse in Bangladesh in 2005, according to BSS. That disaster involved a multistory garment factory in the same area as the building that gave way Wednesday.
Garments make up 80% of Bangladesh's $24 billion of annual exports.

The country has about 4,500 garment factories, where workers make clothes for brands including Tesco, Walmart, JC Penney, Kohl's and Carrefour.

ARGENTINIAN CARDINAL JORGE MARIO BERGOGLIO OF ARGENTINA BECOMES POPE FRANCIS

Newly elected Pope Francis, formerly Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina

Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been elected as the new pope.  He appeared on the balcony of St Peter's Basilica to cheers from tens of thousands of the faithful, after stopping to pray in the Pauline Chapel for a few minutes.

White smoke rising from the conclave at the Vatican signalled a decision had been reached on the new head of the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.  His appearance came after French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the protodeacon, announces "Habemus Papum" - "We have a pope" - and gave the name of the new pontiff in Latin.  Those gathered outside the Vatican broke into cheers as the white smoke indicated the new pontiff had obtained the required two thirds majority in the fifth round of voting by 115 cardinals over two days.

The quick election was a surprise given there was no clear front-runner going into the vote - and the upheaval in the church prompted by Pope Benedict XVI's resignation last month.  His departure threw the church into turmoil and exposed deep divisions among cardinals tasked with finding a manager to clean up a Vatican bureaucracy embroiled in recent scandals.

The pope's Twitter account, whose profile was changed to read 'Sede Vacante' when Benedict stepped down, has now been switched back to 'Pontifex'.
