QUEEN BEATRIX OF THE NETHERLANDS TO ABDICATE FOR SON

Queen Beatrix announced her abdication in a nationally televised address

Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has announced she is abdicating in favour of her son, Prince Willem-Alexander.

In a pre-recorded address broadcast on TV, she said she would formally stand down on 30 April. The queen, who is approaching her 75th birthday, said she had been thinking about this moment for several years and that now was "the moment to lay down my crown".

Queen Beatrix has been head of state since 1980, when her mother abdicated.  In the short televised statement, the queen said it was time for the throne to be held by "a new generation", adding that her son was ready to be king.

Prince Willem-Alexander, 45, is married to Maxima Zorreguieta, a former investment banker from Argentina, and has three young children. He is a trained pilot and an expert in water management. He will become the Netherlands' first king since Willem III, who died in 1890.

Speaking on television immediately after the abdication announcement, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte paid tribute to the queen.
Queen Beatrix is seen by many in the Netherlands as a surrogate grandmother. Most office buildings and universities proudly display her glamorous portrait, decorated in a range of suitably colourful costumes.

She enjoys high approval ratings and is one of the most popular ruling monarchs in Europe. Under Dutch law it is still illegal to insult the queen.

Her abdication is bound to raise interest in the UK, where Queen Elizabeth II is 86 and recently celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. But the situation is different in the Netherlands, where the queen is following recent tradition by abdicating, as her mother and grandmother did before her.

Prince Willem-Alexander's wife, Maxima, is arguably the most attention-generating member of the Dutch royal family. She is expected to be given the title Queen Maxima.

The queen will hand over to her son on Queen's Day on 30 April - already one of the biggest and most raucous celebrations on the Dutch calendar.
"Since her  coronation... she has applied herself heart and soul for Dutch society," he said.
Abdication 'tradition'
Queen Beatrix is the sixth monarch from the House of Orange-Nassau, which has ruled the Netherlands since the early 19th Century.

Correspondents say she is extremely popular with most Dutch people, but her abdication was widely expected and will not provoke a constitutional crisis.

Under Dutch law, the monarch has few powers and the role is considered ceremonial. In recent decades it has become the tradition for the monarch to abdicate.

Queen Beatrix's mother Juliana resigned the throne in 1980 on her 71st birthday, and her grandmother Wilhelmina abdicated in 1948 at the age of 68. Queen Beatrix will be 75 on Thursday.  She has remained active in recent years, but her reign has also seen traumatic events.

In 2009 a would-be attacker killed eight people when he drove his car into crowds watching the queen and other members of the royal family in a national holiday parade.

In February last year her second son, Prince Friso, was struck by an avalanche in Austria and remains in a coma.

PLANE CRASHES IN HUDSON RIVER, TWO PEOPLE RESCUED

smal plane

A small plane crashed into the Hudson River on Sunday evening.  Police rescued two people who were aboard the plane when it crashed in the Hudson. It’s unclear what condition the survivors are in but police did say that they were the only two people aboard the plane.  The two survivors were reportedly wearing life vests and were pulled from the water by emergency responders. The survivors were than transported to a nearby hospital.

According to ABC, the plane quickly sank into the river after the crash. The NY Daily News reports that divers from the FDNY and the NYPD were called to the scene of the crash to investigate the wreckage.  The FAA did not know the make of the plane and could not provide any additional information about the flight.

The plane crash into the Hudson River is just one of many small plane crashes to make the news recently.  Three teenagers were killed in Alabama after they crashed a plane during a joyride. Another plane crashed into a house in Florida, and in France a family of five were killed when their plane crashed on their way home from vacation.

The Hudson River, of course, is the site of another famous plane crash. Four years ago Captain Sully Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger landed an airplane in the Hudson River during an incident that is now referred to as the ”Miracle On The Hudson.”

NIGHTCLUB FIRE KILLS 233 IN BRAZIL

Relatives of victims of the fire at Boate Kiss nightclub attend a collective wake in the southern city of Santa Maria, 187 miles (301 km) west of the state capital Porto Alegre, January 27, 2013. The nightclub fire killed at least 232 people in Santa Maria early on Sunday when a band's pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze and fleeing partygoers stampeded toward blocked and overcrowded exits in the ensuing panic, officials said. REUTERS-Ricardo Moraes
A nightclub fire killed at least 233 people in southern Brazil on Sunday when a band's pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze and fleeing partygoers stampeded toward blocked exits in the ensuing panic.

Most of those who died were suffocated by toxic fumes that rapidly filled the crowded club after sparks from pyrotechnics used by the band for visual effects set fire to soundproofing on the ceiling, local fire officials said.  "Smoke filled the place instantly, the heat became unbearable," survivor Murilo Tiescher, a medical student, told GloboNews TV. "People could not find the only exit. They went to the toilet thinking it was the exit and many died there."

Firemen said one exit was locked and that club bouncers, who at first thought those fleeing were trying to skip out on bar tabs, initially blocked patrons from leaving. The security staff relented only when they saw flames engulfing the ceiling. The tragedy in the university town of Santa Maria in one of Brazil's most prosperous states comes as the country scrambles to improve safety, security and logistical shortfalls before the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Olympics, both intended to showcase the economic advances and first-world ambitions of Latin America's largest nation.

In Santa Maria, a city of more than 275,000 people, rescue workers and weary officials wept alongside family and friends of the victims at a gymnasium being used as a makeshift morgue.  "It's the saddest, saddest day of my life," said Neusa Soares, the mother of one of those killed, 22-year-old Viviane Tolio Soares. "I never thought I would have to live to see my girl go away."

President Dilma Rousseff cut short an official visit to Chile and flew to Santa Maria, where she wept as she spoke to relatives of the victims, most of whom were university students.  "All I can say at the moment is that my feelings are of deep sorrow," said Rousseff, who began her political career in Rio Grande do Sul, the state where the fire occurred. It was the deadliest nightclub fire since 309 people died in a discotheque blaze in China in 2000 and Brazil's worst fire at an entertainment venue since a disgruntled employee set fire to a circus in 1961, killing well over 300 people.

'BARRIER OF THE DEAD'
Local authorities said 120 men and 113 women died in the fire, and 92 people are still being treated in hospitals.  News of the fire broke on Sunday morning, when local news broadcast images of shocked people outside the nightclub called Boate Kiss. Gradually, grisly details emerged.  "We ran into a barrier of the dead at the exit," Colonel Guido Pedroso de Melo, commander of the fire brigade in Rio Grande do Sul, said of the scene that firefighters found on arrival. "We had to clear a path to get to the rest of those that were inside."

Pedroso de Melo said the popular nightclub was overcrowded with 1,500 people packed inside and they could not exit fast.  "Security guards blocked their exit and did not allow them to leave quickly. That caused panic," he said.  The fire chief said the club was authorized to be open, though its permit was in the process of being renewed. But he pointed to several egregious safety violations - from the flare that went off during the show to the locked door that kept people from getting out.  "The problem was the use of pyrotechnics, which is not permitted," Pedroso de Melo said.

The club's management said in a statement that its staff was trained and prepared to deal with any emergency. It said it would help authorities with their investigation.  One of the club's owners has surrendered to police for questioning, GloboNews TV reported.  When the fire began at about 2:30 a.m., many revelers were unable to find their way out in the chaos.
"It all happened so fast," survivor Taynne Vendrusculo told GloboNews TV. "Both the panic and the fire spread rapidly, in seconds."  Once security guards realized the building was on fire, they tried in vain to control the blaze with a fire extinguisher, according to a televised interview with one of the guards, Rodrigo Moura. He said patrons were trampled as they rushed for the doors, describing it as "a horror film."

Band member Rodrigo Martins said the fire started after the fourth or fifth song and the extinguisher did not work.  "It could have been a short circuit, there were many cables there," Martins told Porto Alegre's Radio Gaucha station. He said there was only one door and it was locked. A band member died in the fire.

CELL PHONES STILL RINGING
TV footage showed people sobbing outside the club before dawn, while shirtless firefighters used sledge hammers and axes to knock down an exterior wall to open up an exit.  Rescue officials moved the bodies to the local gym and separated them by gender. Male victims were easier to identify because most had identification on them, unlike the women, whose purses were left scattered in the devastated nightclub.  Piles of shoes remained in the burnt-out club, along with tufts of hair pulled out by people fleeing desperately. Firemen who removed bodies said victims' cell phones were still ringing.

The disaster recalls other incidents including a 2003 fire at a nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, that killed 100 people, and a Buenos Aires nightclub blaze in 2004 that killed nearly 200. In both incidents, a band or members of the audience ignited fires that set the establishment ablaze.  The Rhode Island fire shocked local and federal officials because of the rarity of such incidents in the United States, where enforcement of safety codes is considered relatively strict. After the Buenos Aires blaze, Argentine officials closed many nightclubs and other venues and ultimately forced the city's mayor from office because of poor oversight of municipal codes.

The fire early on Sunday occurred in one of the wealthiest, most industrious and culturally distinct regions of Brazil. Santa Maria is about 186 miles west of Porto Alegre, the capital of a state settled by Germans and other immigrants from northern Europe.  Local clichés paint the region as stricter and more organized than the rest of Brazil, where most residents are a mix descended from native tribes, Portuguese colonists, African slaves, and later influxes of immigrants from southern Europe.

Rio Grande do Sul state's health secretary, Ciro Simoni, said emergency medical supplies from all over the state were being sent to the scene. States from all over Brazil offered support, and messages of sympathy poured in from foreign leaders.

RICH PERSON'S YACHT BURNS DOWN 15 MINUTES AFTER BUYING IT FOR $400,000.00

Paul Ward watches as the ship burns down

They say rich people have money to burn. This rich personhowever the burn got really close to killing him.

Businessman Paul Ward was at the crest of a wave, when it raised the luxury yacht that had paid £269,000 at the Southampton Boat Show.  The elegant Meridian 341, a motor yacht of four berths with two state rooms and amenities, is the dream of every sailor.  But that dream quickly became a nightmare when just 15 minutes after picking up the boat at a shipyard in Hampshire, Mr. Ward, 61, and crew member John Innes jumped for their lives, their clothes in flames, as the ship exploded.

Mr. Ward, now of Woking, Surrey, and Ms. Roads have taken a writ trying to include the cost of the boat at £269,000, experts and consultants' fees, £25,000, forensic experts £9,136.67, storage costs of £3,935.31 and other expenses.  It then intends to take further action for damages in respect of their injury and psychiatric harm.  Then, as he groaned in a raft on a freezing cold day, they watched in horror as the ship was on fire, a large fireball and sank beneath the waves.  Both were rescued by a lifeboat and rushed to Southampton General Hospital with severe burns.

A Coast Guard spokesman said: "When we first saw the burning ship our rescue helicopter personnel were convinced that no one could have escaped alive. It's a miracle anyone survived.”  Mr. Ward and his partner Dawn roads now are suing dealers MGM Marine Ltd, operating as MGM Boats, and Dun Laoghaire Yacht Services for more than £300,000.
The appeal in the Supreme Court says that the yacht was defective.
Mr. Ward says he is lucky to be alive.

NIGERIAN STUDENT SENTENCED TO DEATH BY HANGING IN MALAYSIA FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING

ALOR STAR, Jan 22 — A Nigerian man was sentenced to death by hanging by the High Court here today after he was found guilty of trafficking in 16,936gm of cannabis two years ago.
Judicial Commissioner Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab handed down the sentence on John Amaechi Eze, 23, after finding that the prosecution had established the case beyond reasonable doubt.
Eze, a student at a private college in Kuala Lumpur, was charged with committing the offence in front of Dewan Lye Huat Garden, Jitra, about 9.30pm on May 10, 2011.
Eze, who looked calm when the Mohd Zaki handed down the sentence, then requested permission to contact his family in Nigeria and informed the court that he had not contacted them since he was arrested.
Mohd Zaki said the matter would be arranged by his lawyer, Ali Munawar
Razak, and deputy public prosecutor Wan Nor Hasnita Wan Daud, who prosecuted in the case. - Bernama

Now, for anyone harbouring thoughts of trafficking drugs to this country, this is what you get. It beats me why someone would risk their life, by taking banned substance to this racist shit hole called Malaysia, because when issued a visa, it is clearly stated that the punishment for drug trafficking in Malaysia is death.
To be fair and honest to Malaysia, there are some very nice and wonderful people out there, but they are greatly outnumbered by the bigots among them. I live and study in Malaysia and I've observed a bias pattern in judicial procedures and policing  as regards drug trafficking and crime prevention.

My assertions are based on my day to day experience and observation as a resident, i have no statistical analysis of the Nigerian population living in Malaysia neither do i have the exact figures or nationality of the number of cases prosecuted by the Malaysian judiciary.
From the Nigerian side, The easterners (Igbos) out-number other ethnic groups within the Nigerian community here. That's why most Nigerians you meet are from the east. A lot of Nigerians you meet are not in Malaysia to study, though they are enrolled in one college or another. They are semi-illiterates or outright illiterates, very lousy, brash and arrogant (for reasons i don't understand). Then we have the stranded group who were duped by travel agents into thinking the pasture in Malaysia is greener.

In short, You meet criminals of all shapes, size and age. They just sleep, eat, wake up and hope the next Maga to pays. They are so much, you'll think all Nigerians living in Malaysia are criminals, but we have bright students doing well and graduating from Malaysian universities , we have gainfully employed graduates trained by Malaysians themselves (few) and business men and women doing legitimate business exporting goods to and from Nigeria (also few compared to the population of the Nigerian community). But the Yahoo boys and drug traffickers are so high in number it seems they've all relocated from Nigeria to Malaysia. Conditions here favour them.

Basic infrastructure is great here compared to what we have in Nigeria. 24 hours electricity, Running water, Well laid roads, affordable high speed internet, Compact 3/4 bedroom apartment, affordable furniture,  Little or no scrutiny on international remittance etc. Malaysia is a yahoo boy's Paradise. Though, most foreigners especially new comers call them (Malaysians) lazy and stupid (i still don't get the rationale behind that).

On the Malaysian side, You'll meet the Malay Supremacist. A Muslim, religious bigot, loud, aggressive and assertive. He (Male and Female) hates Jews and despises Christians. He wants to protect the "sanctity" of Islam, State resources are at his disposal. His opinion and interest supersedes that of others. His ancestors are the first settlers in Peninsular Malaysia. His interpretation of the Islamic text  dictates and guides the Muslim community and some times the Whole nation. His favourite question when he meets you for the first time in class or anywhere is "Are you Muslim?". He runs the country and he knows it.

Then we have the Chinese Chauvinist, A business tycoon/ hard working student. Drives flashy cars, He believes his race is the best. He is rich and he has read stories of Nigerians using Malaysian girls as drug mules, Black/chemical money stories, he has meet or read of stranded Nigerians who loiter around Kuala-Lumpur begging for money (These stranded guys don't shower, so they stink). He cringes when you happen to be in the same elevator, crosses to the other side of the road when you are walking towards each other and always thinks you need something from him any time you try to talk to him. He has held on to so many Nigerian horrible stories and thinks every Nigerian is like that.

Then, we have the Angry Indian, Always pissed and Mean-mugging you. He has been discriminated against so much that even his language is not included in the country's ATM machine (LMAO). He is always trying to pick fights with you and the first comment he makes is "THIS IS MY COUNTRY!". He'll smash his crash helmet on you at the slightest provocation or stab you. He also reads of atrocities committed by Nigerians and sees you as a threat.

So, living in Malaysia has made me a racism connoisseur of sought. In fact, I have become so sensitive that I believe I can tell if an individual is racist within a few seconds of being around them. There are people in Malaysia whose sole purpose in life is just to ruin your day. Racism in Malaysia is perfect. It is subtle when it needs to be and brass when necessary.

As a foreigner you might be misled into thinking Malaysia is a boring place and no one gives a damn about you, so you can do what ever you like and get away with it. No, you are seriously mistaking. Malaysia sometimes feels like the North-Korea we watch on T.V. Some citizens are very nosy and they watch and observe every move you make. I read a news article some weeks ago that says about 80% of Police personnel don't do normal Policing but rather, spy and gather intelligence.

So, my point is this. Malaysia is a tightly controlled society where the authorities decide what business prospers, whether legal or illegal. Elements within the police control the drug trade, the distributors are under their command and they arrest them when it's politically needed to unite the country against a common enemy. We hear of stories of Iranian and Arab drug traffickers who are quietly deported and warned never to return to Malaysia but other Nationalities are shown off as trophy in front of news men who broadcast and publish sensational news headline.

South-east Asian countries are united against drug trafficking and they hold meetings regularly to discuss new strategies on deterrent, Death (rolls eyes). So, it baffles me why people still take the risk. John Amaechi Eze was sentenced on January 22, a British Grand mother  Lindsay Sandiford was also sentenced to death on the same day in Indonesia. In the year 2008, Two Nigerians were executed in Indonesia and 1 in Singapore.
